Why suitable drainage or adequate falls are essential;

  1. Preventing Water Damage: Efficient drainage is essential for preventing water from infiltrating the tarmac surface. Water penetration can lead to a range of problems, including cracks, potholes, and the weakening of the pavement structure.
  2. Durability: A well-drained tarmac driveway is more likely to last longer and require fewer repairs or replacements. Proper drainage helps preserve the integrity of the tarmac, reducing the likelihood of premature deterioration.
  3. Preventing Erosion: Effective drainage reduces the risk of erosion caused by water runoff. Without proper drainage, water can wash away the tarmac's sub-base and subgrade, which can lead to significant structural damage.
  4. Minimizing Freeze-Thaw Damage: In areas with cold winters, inadequate drainage can lead to the freeze-thaw cycle, where water enters cracks in the tarmac, freezes, expands, and then thaws. This cycle can cause cracks and potholes, significantly impacting the driveway's surface.
  5. Safety: Poor drainage can result in standing water on the driveway, creating slippery conditions. This poses safety hazards for both pedestrians and vehicles, especially during wet or icy weather.
  6. Preventing Flooding: Proper drainage helps prevent surface water from accumulating and flooding the driveway during heavy rainstorms. Flooded driveways can be inconvenient and may lead to water infiltration into the property.
  7. Maintenance Reduction: Driveways with good drainage systems typically require less maintenance. Regular puddles or standing water can be not only an eyesore but also a sign of poor drainage, and addressing such issues can be costly.
  8. Aesthetics: Drainage plays a role in maintaining the appearance of the tarmac driveway. Standing water or water stains can mar the visual appeal of the surface

To ensure proper drainage on your tarmac driveway, consider the following:

  • Drainage System: Install a suitable drainage system, such as surface drains, aco drains, or permeable tarmac, depending on your specific needs and local conditions.
  • Proper Sloping: Ensure that the driveway has the correct slope or grade to encourage water runoff. The slope should direct water away from the driveway and into the drainage system.
  • Regular Maintenance: Keep the drainage system clear of debris and inspect it regularly for any signs of clogs or damage.
  • Resurfacing: Resurface an older tarmac driveway to maintain it and keep it in top condition.
