wavertree - road repairs

The Macadam Specialist were appointed to carry out works on Picton Road, Wavertree.

Following works by our client to install cabling, we were required to complete the work in two halves to ensure traffic could still pass. Traffic management was installed with suitable two way traffic lights.

Firstly the trenches dug by the client, needed to be built up to full depth specification with Road Base and Binder Course.

Next up was the road planing, which took out the existing surface course and provided a level surface ready for resurfacing.

Then our Surfacing Specialist's got to work, laying a new Hot Rolled Asphalt surface course in two separate halves, keeping traffic flowing, but providing a new, perfectly finished surface.

Last in, the white liners to install fresh new white lining to the finished surface.

Works complete and one very happy client.

Road planing

Road planing, also known as asphalt milling or cold milling, is a process used in road construction and maintenance to remove the top layer of an existing road surface. This process involves the use of specialised machinery called a milling machine or cold planer, which has a rotating drum equipped with cutting teeth. Here's how road planing works:

  1. Preparation: Before road planing begins, the road is typically inspected to assess its condition. This helps determine whether the top layer of the road needs to be removed and replaced. Common reasons for road planing include addressing surface irregularities, improving the road's profile, removing damaged or deteriorated asphalt, or preparing the road for resurfacing or rehabilitation.
  2. Milling: The milling machine is driven along the road's surface, and the rotating drum with cutting teeth grinds and removes the top layer of the road. The depth of the cut can be adjusted to achieve the desired result. The removed material, which consists of the milled asphalt and aggregates, is referred to as "milling waste."
  3. Waste Removal: The milled material is collected by a conveyor belt system on the milling machine and loaded into trucks for disposal or recycling. In some cases, the milled material may be recycled and used in the production of new asphalt mixes.
  4. Surface Preparation: After milling, the road surface is typically swept or cleaned to remove any loose debris and ensure a clean, even surface for the next phase of construction or resurfacing.

Road planing offers several benefits, including:

  • Surface Improvement: It can remove surface imperfections, ruts, and irregularities, resulting in a smoother and safer road surface.
  • Profile Adjustment: Road planing can adjust the road's cross-sectional profile, ensuring proper drainage and improving road geometry.
  • Recycling: Milled asphalt and aggregates can be recycled, reducing the need for new materials and decreasing environmental impact.
  • Cost-Effective: It can be a cost-effective way to prepare the road for resurfacing or rehabilitation, as it eliminates the need to remove the entire road surface.
  • Reduced Disruption: Road planing is often less disruptive to traffic compared to full road reconstruction.

Road planing is a common technique used in road maintenance and rehabilitation projects to extend the life of existing road surfaces and maintain their quality and safety.
